Vice President of Autonomy

Work Location: Huntsville, AL
Compensation: Competitive, DOE

About the Position
Edge Autonomy is seeking an experienced autonomy/AI software executive that can lead the creation and integration of new autonomy capabilities onto our group-2 and group-3 Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs). In this role, you will lead a team of experienced UAS software developers to create new onboard and offboard algorithms that enable autonomous flight operations and mission management. You will work directly with government customers to align Edge Autonomy technical solutions with government technical vision and CONOPS for autonomy. Where possible, you will leverage government-funded software and align the company with government standards, while also paving the technical path for game-changing levels of UAS autonomy.
The software your team develops will make fundamental decisions about aircraft flight behavior in the absence of human involvement and will handle a variety of dynamic real-world conditions and events including weather, wind, threats, target, and degradations to aircraft state. This is not a laboratory science project. This software will be deployed on TRL-9 fielded aircraft that actively perform operations around the world.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Build a team of high-performance software engineers capable of writing and delivering advanced onboard autonomy software and overseeing the technical execution of software tasks and deliverables.
• Work with customers to leverage existing government source code for UAS autonomy and align the Edge Autonomy tech vision with government CONOPS and requirements.
• Lead your team of software engineers to Implement and/or integrate autonomous path planning algorithms onto Edge Autonomy aircraft to autonomously respond to high-level mission needs, generate optimal flight paths in nominal and degraded states, and react to contingency situations including external factors (adverse weather, threats) and onboard mission-critical or flight-critical events (lost comms, lost engine, degraded flight control).
• Oversee internal R&D expenditures for the development of autonomy capabilities
• Directly support business development to capture external funds to expand autonomy capabilities

Required Qualifications
• Experience delivering UAS onboard software
• Understanding of UAS architectures and subsystems
• Understanding of UAS flight planning TTPs
• Understanding of Flight Behavior and Aircraft Performance
• Experience working with US Government customers to develop UAS software

Desired Qualifications
• Deep understanding of flight-critical software requirements
• Experience building a System Integration Lab (SIL) or Hardware Integration Lab (HIL) for Unmanned Aircraft
• Experience supporting flight test
• Practical experience writing firmware/embedded code for a physical device
• Experience performing technical review of embedded software
• Experience developing UAS architectures
