Product Engineer

Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Adaptive Energy, LLC (“Adaptive”) designs and manufactures solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for back up and portable power applications. Our tubular ceramic cell design allows us to offer compact and rugged systems that can operate in the most austere and remote locations. The company offers 250 – 350 W fuel systems and is in the process of developing systems with +1,000-watt capacity that are powered by globally available and energy dense propane, butane, and natural gas.

Our lightweight series of fuel cells power unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for the military and our performance line of fuel cells provides backup power solutions in extreme weather conditions for rail, communications, and infrastructure.
We’re currently looking for a Product Engineer to join our small but mighty Ann Arbor-based team. You’ll succeed in this role if you are a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills, highly organized, thoughtful, strategic, and detail oriented. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are a must. Time management and the ability to galvanize the right people around an opportunity or problem is also crucial. This candidate will manage the product lifecycle for one of our two product lines, engage the R&D team, perform verification test activities, update product requirements based on customer input, and work with the manufacturing and purchasing teams to improve product design, manufacturability and quality.


Duties and Responsibilities, but not limited to:
• Analyze cost and return on investment for product ideas.
• Work closely with R&D team to design, validate, and implement product ideas.
• Work with purchasing to select alternate parts as the supply chain shifts, or customer requirements move.
• Lead products from development through manufacturing release and obsolescence.
• Generate engineering and manufacturing documentation as needed (DFMEA, DVPR, Drawings, PFMEA, Work Instructions).
• Be self-motivated, with a drive to complete projects and document results.
• Thrive in a small team environment.
• Work with Manufacturing Engineers to develop Quality Control measures to ensure ongoing product reliability.
• Experience within a manufacturing environment.

Required Education and Experience:
• BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
• Product Development experience (3+ years)
• Product Management experience (3+ years)
• CAD (SolidWorks) experience, GD&T
• LabView/Python experience desired
• Automation experience desired
• Ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and multi-task
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Extremely proactive with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
• Highly organized, reliable, and resourceful
• Flexible to travel to suppliers or customer locations as required.
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Special Requirements:
• U.S. Citizen required, per ITAR definition

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the candidate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Most work is performed in enclosed buildings. Varied indoor working environment conditions. While performing the duties, the candidate is frequently exposed to computer terminals, sitting, and standing for long lengths of time. Frequent and prolonged periods of time looking at a computer screen. Walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, sitting, and bending during each workday. The vision requirement includes close vision, distant vision, and computer vision. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Carrying up to 45 pounds. PPE for production, as well as PPE for Covid and infectious diseases, include a facial mask, and protective gloves as necessary. These ADA requirements are not inclusive of the performed and responsibilities to be held by the candidate.
