Position Summary

Edge Autonomy is looking for a GNC Engineer II to grow our small and agile team of engineers. We are looking for a candidate who can collaborate well with a small team to develop unmanned aircraft products for military and commercial applications. The work is hands-on, fast-paced, fun, and rewarding. There is a good variety of projects and challenges and exposure to multiple disciplines, including aerospace, mechanical, electrical, and software.

  • Design and develop guidance, navigation, and flight control algorithms for unmanned fixed-wing and VTOL aircraft
  • Verify control law performance and troubleshoot flight control issues using 6-DOF analysis tools, SIL/HIL simulation, and flight test data
  • Write, test, and document C/C++ autopilot software code
  • Analyze customer-supplied flight data to figure out what went wrong, and work out how to make it better
  • Generate shop and flight test plans to explore or validate vehicle behavior
  • Participate in flight test activities
  • Analyze flight logs to (help) determine the root cause of issues
  • Perform simulations to answer what-if questions
  • Analyze vehicle firmware and communicate with the firmware team

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ year’s work experience in flight control for UAS, software implementation of flight control systems, flight performance testing, flight data review
  • 3+ years of relevant experience developing flight control software for fixed-wing aircraft, with demonstrated understanding of fixed-wing aircraft dynamics, control theory/design/analysis, and navigation theory/design/analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in C/C++
  • Experience working in computer model-based development of flight control systems, including proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or another model-based development toolset
  • Strong background in sensor fusion
  • Familiar with sensor and actuator characteristics and limitations
  • Experience tuning PID controllers, state estimators, signal processing, path planning
  • Control system simulation, implementation, test, and verification experience
  • Must understand engineering concepts, principles, and theory and experience demonstrating the application of those concepts
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with embedded system development and signal processing
  • Experience designing and implementing software for embedded real-time control systems for unmanned aircraft and/or robotics

Hiring Requirements:

  • If an offer of employment is extended, a background check is required, and the offer of employment is contingent on the results
  • This is a salaried position requiring 40 hours a week during normal business hours. Additional hours may be required to support development or production goals
  • Being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 is a condition of employment at Edge Autonomy. Proof of vaccination or an accommodation request approved by Edge Autonomy will be required prior to starting employment with the company
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance

Work Conditions

Conditions will vary. Most work performed in enclosed buildings. Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of the time, walking, lifting, and reaching. Must be capable of lifting 20 lbs., 20+lbs. assisted by other employees as needed.

Standard business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a one-hour lunch period.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the candidate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Most work performed in enclosed buildings. This position is primarily housed in a temperature-controlled office. While performing the duties, candidate is frequently exposed to computer terminals, sitting, and standing for long lengths of time. Frequent and prolonged periods of time looking at a computer screen. Walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, sitting, bending during each workday. The vision requirement includes, close vision, distant vision, computer vision. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Usage of copier machines, printer machines, and machines designated to engineering practices. Carrying up to 50 pounds. PPE for production, as well as PPE for Covid and infectious diseases include facial mask, protective gloves as necessary. These ADA requirements are not inclusive of the performed and responsibilities to be held by the candidate.
